Competitions 2022/2023: The GWR Winter Doubles 2022/2023 was run over 10 Sundays at various venues over the winter period, October until March. Saxons had 2 teams entered: Oh Coche consists of Charles Faulkner, Alan Shepherd, Jenny Clabon and Pete Chambers. Massif Boules consists of Ian Savage, Mike Fidler, Keith Dancer and Liz Cosham. Oh Coche ended the season in 20th place and Massif Boules in 25th place. League table HERE Competitions 2022: Jenny Clabon and Sheila Karran entered the GWR International Womens day competition on 13th March and got into the Gold playoffs and were beaten by the overal winners. Pete Chambers, Ian Savage, Charles Faulkner and Jenny Clabon entered the GWR Inter Regional Qualifiers (I.R.Q.) on 20th March, 3rd April and 10th April under the name Saxonites. All 3 rounds were held at The Fox Inn near Bristol. The team came 18th out of 20 entries, it was only the top 12 teams that qualify to go to the I.R.Q. finals in September 2022. Liz Cosham made a guest appearence due illness within the team. There were 3 teams entered in the Gotherington Invitational doubles competition on 24th April. Nobody Cares: Jenny Clabon & Pete Chambers who came =7th, I’ve No Idea: Liz Cosham and Keith Dancer who came =10th and Saxonish: Kevin Weatherhead and Maureen Boyse who came 18th out of 22 teams entered. Liz Cosham and Pete Chambers entered the GWR Doubles competition on 29th May held at Cricklade Hotel and Spa. They ended up runners-up in the Bronze section of the playoffs. Jenny Clabon and Pete Chambers entered the GWR Mixed doubles competition on 12th June at the Northey Arms and ended up in the Gold (top) section of the afternoon knockout section and were beaten by the eventual runners-up in the final. Sheila Karran, Charles Faulkner and Pete Chambers entered the GWR Triples on 3rd July held at Royal Wootton Bassett sports ground and lost all 3 morning round robin matches and just lost 12-13 to a local Wootton Bassett team in the Silver section semi-finals. Keith Dancer, Liz Cosham and Sue McKechnie also entered the GWR Triples and won 1 of their morning round robin matches and also lost in the Silver section semi-finals. There were 3 entries in the Sherston Festival of Boule held on 16th July. Team 1: “Oh Coche” Jenny Clabon, Liz Cosham and Pete Chambers. Team 2: “Massif Boules” Ian Savage, Mike Fidler and Alan Shepherd. Team 3: Keith Dancer plus 2 unknown ladies. “Oh Coche” beat team”Massif Boules” in the first round, “Oh Coche”then lost 11-4 in the second round to a subsequent quarter finalist “C3”. “Massif Boules” lost in the first round of the Founders plate competition. Keith Dancer and ladies won their first round match and then lost in the second round. 31st July: GWR Over 55 Doubles (Veterans) at Larkhall, Bath the only entry was Jenny Clabon and Pete Chambers. Jenny dropped out due illness so Liz Cosham stepped in. They won 2 of the 3 round-robin games but ended up in the Gold knockout section. They won their quarter-final and just lost in the semi- final against the eventual overall winners Alan McInnes and Lee Herring. 3rd September 2022: The Eileen Mitchell trophy competition with raffle prizes donated by club members. The Ladies trophy winner was Annamaria Edwards, the Mens trophy winner was Stephen Roberts and the wooden spoon recipient was Kathryn Satchell. £130 was raised for the Marie Curie charity. A big thank you to Jim Mitchell and family for running the day. 3-Ender competition at Cricklade Hotel & Spa held on Sunday 4th September click HERE for results. Sheila Karran and David Fielder were the overall winners, Pete Chambers and Ian Savage came 6th and Jenny and Prue came 9th a good showing from Saxons members. Click HERE for photo of the winners. Saxons 3-ender competition with pairs randomly drawn, was held on Sunday 9th October 2022. 12 members entered and a draw was made to create 6 pairs. They played 13 rounds with a drinks and lunch break. Each round consisted of 3 ends only unless the points were even when a 1 boule per player pointing decider was held. After all the rounds were completed the Wins / Losses, points difference, points For and Against were recorded. The overall winners were decided on the number of Wins then points difference followed by points For. The winners were Jenny Clabon & Jean Milner, second were Peter Flower and Lynne Aman and third were Chris Large and Pete Chambers. Results HERE Photo HERE The Cotswold League has concluded for this year with RWB Royals beating Nomades in the playoff. The club entered one team this year playing matches in the Northern section of the Cotswold League. We finished a creditable 3 rd out of 6 teams winning 5 matches and losing 5.
